All Instruments, desk chairs, walls, door frames, counters etc. will be sanitized with cleaning wipes to eliminate the level of bacteria.

Nails

Shortly trimmed nails are required to play the piano. Practicing

All students are highly encouraged to practice their assignments daily; however, each person is free to practice at their own pace. Parental involvement, in-home practice, is crucial for student success.  If you are the parent of the student, please help the student to establish a practice routine and see that practice time is free of distractions; plan to sit with your child for at least a portion of their daily practice time.

Participation
The key to success in piano study is participation from the student and, to a degree, the parent. Participation includes: practicing between lessons, attending lessons, performing in recitals, and taking part in enrichment activities. Parents are encouraged NOT to make a child who does not really wish to learn to play the piano take lessons.

Assignment

It is mandatory for students to bring ALL their books and materials to class. Parents are expected to review each child’s assignment and provide a signature to ensure that the child completes their work.

  • Materials - At the first consultation, students will be suggested a list of needed books and materials to purchase. Books and materials can be purchased at several music stores around the Birmingham area such as; Guitar Center, Ellis Piano Store, Alabama Piano Gallery, Highland Music Store, Arts Music Shop or Baily Brothers, as well as on a multitude of online stores such as Amazon.com and SheetMusicPlus.com. The teacher will purchase books; however, the full price reimbursement is expected.

  • Carrying Bags- Students are recommended to use a canvas tote bag to carry books to and from lessons. * Students will be assigned a bag during registration.

  • Assignment books - to receive weekly written guidance.

  • Metronome - Students must have access to a working metronome during home practice. You may choose a mechanical or digital metronome. We suggest purchasing a separate metronome at a music store or online, new or used or use the existing metronome on your keyboard, you may also be able to install a metronome app via smartphone and tablets.

  • Electric Keyboard- The Keyboard is the most vital part of practicing lessons. It is mandatory that each student has some form of a keyboard to practice on if not, you should purchase one from one of the music stores listed above. *The 66-key-keyboard is fine, typically for younger students, but an 88-key-keyboard is highly recommended for students to get the full scale of the piano for proper positioning of the hands-on the keys.

  • Piano- If your home includes a satisfactory, playable acoustic piano, regular tuning is crucial to the development of the student's aural ear so that the student is hearing the proper pitches of each note on the piano. The instrument should be tuned at least once a year. Ask your piano technician to check the functions of all pedals and keys. Practicing a fine, tuned piano is important!
